The timing fabric enables communication equipment to meet the stringent synchronization requirements of communication networks. It segments the timing fabric into two major elements: timing cards and line cards.

SETS PLLs for compliance with synchronization standards
T1/E1 LIUs for receiving external BITS/SSU references
T4 DPLLs for rate converting recovered clocks from line card PHYs
Line cards:
DPLLs for selecting a backplane reference and rate converting and jitter attenuating it
Jitter attenuators and frequency translators
Differential fanout buffers with low additive RMS phase jitter
