The USB3300-EZK is an industrial temperature high-speed USB physical layer transceiver (PHY). The transceiver interfaces to the ULPI-compliant link layer via ULPI. The ULPI interface successfully reduces the UTMI+ interface from 54 pins to 12 pins using in-band signaling and status byte transfer methods between the link and PHY. The PHY design of USB3300-EZK starts with the ULPI interface. No UTMI to ULPI wrapper is used in this design, but a seamless ULPI to link interface is provided. The result is a PHY with low latency transmit and receive times.

The USB3300-EZK is designed for flexibility so host and OTG functionality can be easily added in the future without adding additional pins. The perfect combination of the ULPI interface and Microchip's proprietary technology makes the USB3300-EZK ideal for integrating high-speed USB into new designs. In addition, USB3300-EZK adopts an industry-leading small package (5mm × 5mm), and its height is less than 1mm, which provides great convenience for its application in compact spaces. Not only that, USB3300-EZK also integrates all DP and DM termination resistors and requires a minimal number of external components, further simplifying the design and production process.

Ⅶ. How does USB3300-EZK support OTG protocol?

1. Information exchange capability

As an OTG device, USB3300-EZK has information exchange capabilities. When two USB3300-EZK devices are connected, they can determine their respective roles by exchanging information. This includes device type, speed capabilities, and other relevant parameters. Through these information exchanges, stable communication connections can be established between devices and data can be transmitted.

2. Software dynamic configuration

USB3300-EZK supports software dynamic configuration, which makes it possible to programmatically change the USB role of the device at runtime. By writing appropriate drivers or firmware, users can switch between host and peripheral modes to meet the needs of different application scenarios.

3. OTG function integration

USB3300-EZK integrates OTG function, allowing it to function as both a USB host and a USB peripheral. This means that the USB3300-EZK device can be interconnected with other OTG devices without the need for an additional hub. When two USB3300-EZK devices are connected, they can determine through negotiation which end is the host and which end is the peripheral.

4. ULPI interface design

USB3300-EZK supports ULPI (UTMI+ Level Physical Interface) interface design, which makes communication between the USB controller and the physical layer possible. ULPI is a standardized interface specifically used to transmit data and control signals between USB host controllers and USB transceivers. In OTG mode, the ULPI interface can realize the physical connection and data transmission functions between the host and peripherals.

5. Low configuration Mini-AB connection

USB3300-EZK supports low-profile Mini-AB connection. The Mini-AB connector is a miniaturized USB connector with two leads used to determine the connection direction. By detecting the status of these two pins, USB3300-EZK can determine the role of the other connected device (host or peripheral), thereby performing corresponding role switching.

6. Switching between host and peripheral modes

USB3300-EZK supports seamless switching between host and peripheral modes. When the device needs to communicate with other devices as a host, USB3300-EZK can switch to host mode and control the USB transceiver for data transmission through the ULPI interface. When the device needs to be connected to other hosts as a peripheral, USB3300-EZK can switch to peripheral mode and accept data transmission from the host.
