Winbond president says the memory chip supply will become tight

28 August 2023

Tung-Yi Chan, the president of Winbond Electronics, said that the supply of DRAM and NAND flash chips will show a gap in the second half of 2020, but the rebound in end market demand may be later than expected.

As more and more Chinese cities are blocked by coronavirus, uncertainty has cast a shadow over the memory market this year. Chan said that the next two weeks will be crucial and we will see if the epidemic can be controlled Whether consumer confidence can be restored.

Chan pointed out that due to the development of 5G technology, the demand of the DRAM market is still optimistic.By the second half of 2020, demand will be equal to or exceed supply.

Chan said that driven by the strong demand for TWS headsets, Wi-Fi 6, IoT and 5G-related equipment, the NOR flash and SLC NAND markets will achieve a healthy supply and demand balance in the first half of 2020.The supply in the second half may be in short supply.

Chan said large wafer makers have been cautious about capacity expansion, which has limited supply-side growth. The control of the supply side will become another factor behind the tight supply in the second half of this year.

Despite the effects of the coronavirus, Winbond expects the memory market to benefit the company in 2020. The company suffered a loss in the fourth quarter of 2019 due to the unsatisfactory yield of its internally developed 25nm process, which resulted in a lower ASP for DRAM products. The yield of this process is improving, and the company is still optimistic about this year's operations.
