Toshiba to expand with new lithium-ion battery plant at its business complex in Yokohama

28 August 2023

Toshiba Corp. will set up a new plant at its business complex in Yokohama in an effort to boost production of lithium-ion batteries. The company will invest ¥16.2 billion in the new plant. Construction will begin in July 2019, with the start of its operations planned for October 2020.

As the company is anticipating strong future demand for the product,  the lithium-ion battery industry will be a main pillar of its business reconstruction plan, and the plant will serve as a research and development center for the business.

It would be Toshiba’s first new plant in about 10 years, except the factories of its former semiconductor-manufacturing subsidiary which was sold in June. Once completed the new three-story building will provide the company with an additional floor area of 27’000 square metres, for Toshiba to respond to future expansions of the lithium-ion rechargeable battery market.
