End all pending litigation! Ericsson and Apple Sign Global Patent License Agreement

28 August 2023

According to the official website of Ericsson, Ericsson and Apple have reached a global patent license agreement for many years, which includes cross licensing related to the necessary technology of patented cellular standards, and grants certain other patent rights. In addition, the two sides also agreed to strengthen technical and business cooperation, including technology, interoperability and standard development.

Ericsson said that the settlement agreement ended the lawsuits filed by the two companies in several countries (including the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas in the United States) and the complaints filed with the United States International Trade Commission (USITC).

It is reported that the dispute between Ericsson and Apple has been launched worldwide. According to statistics, Ericsson has filed patent infringement lawsuits against Apple in at least six jurisdictions, including the United States (ITC and regional courts), Germany, the Netherlands, Brazil, Colombia and the United Kingdom. The reason is that the negotiation between the two parties on the renewal of the 7-year telecommunications patent license contract reached for the first time in 2015 failed.

Earlier, it was reported that Ericsson's quarterly patent royalty revenue decreased by SEK 1.1 billion (US $98.24 million) due to patent litigation with Apple and other companies. Ericsson pointed out in the latest announcement that, including the impact of the settlement and the ongoing intellectual property business with all other licensees, it is expected that the intellectual property license revenue will reach 5.5 billion to 5 billion kronor (530.3 million to 578.5 million dollars) in the fourth quarter of 2022.
