Apple WWDC 2024 Conference: AI Leads the Future

11 June 2024 33

On Monday, June 10, Eastern Time, Apple held the 2024 Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) at its headquarters in Cupertino, California. In this highly anticipated event, Apple released a series of software updates including iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS 15, watchOS 11, tvOS 18, and visionOS 2. However, the most eye-catching thing is undoubtedly its artificial intelligence technology “Apple Intelligence”. International mainstream media paid close attention to this technological feast and made comments one after another. Some comments believe that the release of “Apple Intelligence” marks the coming of the Apple artificial intelligence era.

In today’s keynote speech, Apple CEO Tim Cook first detailed the updates of Apple’s various operating systems.

iOS 18

The update of iOS 18 not only made a lot of improvements in AI, but also made many optimizations in user experience. By integrating large language models (LLMs), Siri has been comprehensively improved and become more intelligent and considerate. For example, users can now easily edit photos, create personalized music playlists, and even write and edit documents through voice commands through Siri. At the same time, iOS 18 introduces Rich Communication Services (RCS), which greatly improves the communication experience between iPhone and Android devices. Users can now enjoy features such as read receipts, real-time input indicators, and emoji reactions in cross-platform chats.

iPadOS 18

Now iPad can operate the screen through the simulcast sharing function, and a new calculator app has been added. The new calculator app in iPadOS 18 not only supports basic mathematical operations, but also specially adds the “Math Notes” feature. This feature allows users to write equations directly on the iPad with Apple Pencil and automatically solve them by the app. The addition of this feature makes the iPad more attractive in the fields of education and academic research.

macOS 15

macOS 15 brings iPhone notifications to the Mac, which are displayed together with other notifications in the Mac notification center. In addition, macOS 15 now automatically adjusts the window size to tile and fill the screen to maximize the use of screen space. macOS 15 also includes a new dedicated password management tool that allows users to easily manage Wi-Fi passwords, application and website passwords, verification codes, and more. These passwords can be synchronized across devices, and macOS uses the autofill feature to fill in passwords in the password management tool. Thanks to the iCloud for Windows application, this password management tool is also available on Windows.

watchOS 11

watchOS 11 introduces a new “training load” feature. This feature scores each exercise by analyzing sensor data such as heart rate, pace, altitude, and combining user personal information such as age and weight, and then calculates the training load level. In addition to the exercise function, watchOS 11 also adds the Vitals app, which can comprehensively track key vital signs such as the user’s heart rate, sleep breathing frequency, and wrist temperature. By comparing with the normal range, the Vitals app can detect abnormalities in time and remind users to rest or seek medical treatment in time. In addition, for pregnant women, the menstrual tracking app can now also display gestational age, providing more help for health management during pregnancy. In terms of interface design, the portrait dial of watchOS 11 has been redesigned, and the smart stacking function has become smarter, and a real-time activity function has been added.

tvOS 18

In addition, tvOS 18 has added the InSight feature, which will display the current cast list and film and television soundtracks, and can be seamlessly linked to Apple Music. This feature is available in the TV app of the tvOS system as well as the TV app of the iPhone and iPad. The new version of tvOS 18 supports 21:9 screen display, and the automatic subtitle function will be more accurate and the recognition will be faster. It is worth mentioning that AirPods has also ushered in a new feature. Now users can answer or hang up the phone by nodding or shaking their heads.

visionOS 2

As the supporting operating system for the Vision Pro headset launched last year, visionOS 2 brings more native applications and functions. For example, its real-time subtitle function can instantly display the subtitles of all conversations in the user’s field of view, which greatly facilitates communication. In addition, this update also optimizes the home screen arrangement and application sorting functions of the headset, thereby further improving the user experience.

After introducing a series of operating systems, we finally came to the highlight of today. The company announced that it will deeply integrate artificial intelligence into its applications and features, and named it “Apple Intelligence”.

The Apple Intelligence is a bold exploration of Apple in the field of AI. As a personal intelligence system for iPhone, iPad and Mac, it combines the power of generative models with personal context to provide users with extremely useful and highly relevant intelligent services. In short, Apple Intelligence relies on the super computing power of Apple chips to accurately understand the user’s current situation and help users quickly complete the most important tasks by linking multiple apps.

According to Apple, when processing user requests, the system can intelligently choose whether to use local device resources or call Apple’s private cloud services to ensure optimal performance and privacy protection. Apple Intelligence will first be launched on iPhone 15 Pro, iPad and Mac equipped with M1 chips and above, and is expected to cover millions of users.

In addition, the Apple WWDC 2024 Worldwide Developer Conference also had several highlights.

First, Apple announced a partnership with OpenAI to introduce a series of generative AI features for iOS 18, including automatic generation of emojis and replies to emails and text messages. Secondly, Apple has made major upgrades to Siri. In the past, Siri’s functions were relatively limited for most iPhone users. People often used it to set alarms or play songs on Spotify, but did not regard it as a real digital assistant. However, now, the generative AI version of Siri has received an important update.

It is reported that the new Siri can not only interact with users more intuitively through the pulsating lights on the edge of the device, but also understand users’ voice commands more accurately. According to statistics, the upgraded Siri’s understanding accuracy has increased by 20%. In addition, through integration with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Siri is now able to handle more complex queries, including multi-round conversations and contextual understanding.

Of course, Apple has always attached great importance to privacy protection, so it has also set a new high standard in AI privacy. Apple Intelligence generally uses on-device processing to ensure the security of user data. However, it currently only supports A17 Pro chips and M series chips, that is, it is limited to iPhone 15 Pro and above models, as well as iPad and Mac products equipped with M series chips. When faced with more complex user task requirements, Private Cloud Compute technology will extend the privacy and security of Apple devices to the cloud, providing users with more intelligent experiences while ensuring that user data will never be stored or leaked. Independent experts can check the code running on Apple chip servers to verify the effectiveness of this privacy protection measure.

The AI technology highlights demonstrated by Apple at WWDC highlight that the company is fully integrating AI into its products and services. Through cooperation with ChatGPT and significant upgrades to Siri, Apple is using AI technology to enhance user experience and further strengthen the competitiveness of its ecosystem. These updates not only highlight Apple’s technological strength, but also bring more convenient and personalized services to users. At the same time, this also indicates that AI technology will occupy a core position in future Apple devices.
