Taiwan-based optical component maker is considering ordering 5G base stations in China and South Korea

Telecom operators in China and South Korea predict that Taiwan ’s optical communication component suppliers will have strong demand for related components required for 5G base stations based on 2020.

The source said that Huawei recently issued an order for its 3 million 25G transceiver modules, and relevant suppliers are ready to ship these devices after verification, adding that Huawei is expected to release another 3 million modules order.

Sources said that Taiwan ’s optical component manufacturers TrueLight and LuxNet have entered Huawei ’s supply chain by sharing Huawei ’s orders with Chinese suppliers such as Huagong Technology.

The source added that recent market reports also indicate that ZTE plans to release orders for 3 million modules through open tender.

The source pointed out that Chinese telecom operators-China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom-are expected to install 600,000-800,000 5G base stations in 2020 and about 100,000-200,000 in 2019. In South Korea, the top three telecom operators-SK Telecom, KT and LG Telecom-will continue to plan to install 230,000 5G base stations in 2021-2022.

TrueLight stated that it will begin delivering 25G products to Korean customers in the third quarter of 2019, and its total shipments of 25G modules currently reach approximately 5,000-10,000 units per month, adding that it will begin in the second quarter Deliver similar modules to Chinese customers in 2020.

TrueLight said that it is expected that the proportion of 5G products in its total revenue will climb to 5-10% in 2020, and DWDM equipment will be shipped to China as early as the second quarter of 2020.
