OLED has new rivals, low cost and high brightness OLCD debut

28 August 2023

In March of this year, FlexEnable officially launched the OLCD display technology for the market. Recently, it has been reported in the media that FlexEnable is working with display manufacturers, and mass production of OLCD is expected in 2021.

In the field of TV sets, products that are currently active in the TV market are mainly divided into three types of panels, namely QLED, OLED and LCD.

LCD is the liquid crystal technology that we are most in contact with at present. The technology is highly mature, with the highest production capacity at the current stage, lower finished product prices, and a wide range of applications in low-end products. OLED is mostly used in high-end products, of course, high-end also means high prices.

At present, LCD technology has matured, so production cost and life are relatively guaranteed. OLED has the advantages of excellent color performance, high contrast, and short response time. However, at present, OLED has a bottleneck that is difficult to overcome, that is, cost and product life problems.

OLCD can be understood as a flexible LCD, which has good ductility, is thinner, lighter, and shatterproof, and can adapt to various surfaces. The advantages of OLCD technology are precisely reflected in cost and life. OLCD has good application prospects in the field of large, medium and small size panels.

Compared with OLCD, the current dimensional stability has become the biggest challenge in the production of plastic substrate flexible OLED screens.

Excessive dimensional changes make it extremely difficult to position the photomask, and also limit the size of the transistor design. At the same time, it is easy to generate internal stress between the interface of the organic and inorganic material layers, resulting in peeling between layers during bending.

This makes the technical difficulty required for the production of large-size flexible OLED panels higher, which is also a major reason why the cost of large-size OLED panels is still relatively high, and there are still certain difficulties in large-scale use.

FlexEnable is a company from the United Kingdom that has been working on flexible displays and sensors. OLCD is the only display technology that can provide large-scale, low-cost, high-brightness and flexible displays for flexible displays.

Related industry analysts said that although OLCD technology is not very mature compared with OLED, it is still worth investigating from the characteristics of OLCD. Due to the low material cost, it has more opportunities to successfully industrialize in the future.

OLCD may become a major competitor of OLED in the future.
